St Margaret of Antioch Church, Crick – Northamptonshire – Highly Commended in the Stone Federation Natural Stone Awards - 2004
THE PROJECT
Crick village is set in the beautiful rolling Northamptonshire countryside. The parish church of St Margaret of Antioch is a Grade I listed building in the centre of Crick village.
The extent of the repairs to the church must have at times seemed overwhelming to the community, the tower had been roped off for many years due to falling masonry and several of the tracery windows were boarded up as they were in a state of collapse.
After much fund raising and applying for English Heritage grants, they got the funds together to commence the restoration.
Description of works:-
Renewal of defective stone to the spire ashlars and spire light surrounds
Renewal of defective stone to the belfry window and surrounds, tower buttress and ashlars
Tower, west door surround
Complete descaling to tower stonework and pointing to loose and open joints
Extensive stonework renewals to four tracery windows
The church is a Grade I listed building and the utmost care was taken to repair and replace stone as closely as possible to the original.
In one window, the tracery was very badly tilted but the replaced parts fitted perfectly, which requires great skill in the setting out to incorporate the distortion of the sections.
There were a number of different stones used in the repairs and the overall result is a very pleasing example of stone restoration on one of our historic buildings.
This project won a Highly Commended in the Stone Federation Great Britain Natural Stone Awards – 2004 in the Restoration Catagory
