The Perseus and Andromeda Fountain at Witley Court consists of three parts, the two Nereid cherubs either side of the main fountain of Perseus and Andromeda. Both of the original Nereids were missing. Each Nereid weighed approx 6 tons and were 2 metres high by 2 metres long and were made in three stones. The main fountain had been struck by lightening and fallen into disrepair. It weighs around 220 tonnes and is made of Portland Stone. Here the carving was challenging as it had to match up to the original. The main parts to be replaced were Perseus's left leg and left wing, his right arm along with numerous small items such as dolphin's tails, beards, dragons teeth, horses ears, a big toe and heel on Perseus's foot. The new chain and shackle for Andromeda, the bows and arrows for the Nereids and the lance for Perseus were made out of glass fibre to avoid the possibility of another lightening strike.
It proved to be a demanding and technical project where the carving had to match the existing which was of very high quality. However, it is now restored to its original glory and has been a very enjoyable project to have been involved with.
The fountain was officially opened by Prince Charles.
Judges Comments:- "this magnificent 1920's fountain was struck by lightening in the 1960's and has now been restored to its former glory. As with all good restoration on works of art like this, it is extremely difficult to see the difference between the old and the new".
